Orange Chalcedony, otherwise known as Carnelian is the orange variety of Chalcedony. Carnelian usually occurs Semi-transparent in colors ranging from Yellowish Orange to Orangey Red. Believed to turn the shy and timid into eloquent speakers, carnelian has been fashioned as cameos and beads. This stone was first mined in India in the fourth Century BC. Today, some popular sources for this stone are Brazil and India.
Several cheap dyed or colored imitations of this stone exist in the market. However these dyed colors are neither permanent nor stable, and will fade with time. Heat treatment is common to this stone and is considered by the industry to be a permanent, stable and safe process for most gemstones and diamonds.
Care
While chalcedony is a fairly tough stone and can take the ware and tare of the everyday use, proper care must be taken as all stones are vulnerable to breakage and damage regardless of toughness or hardness. Exposure to Hydrochloric Acid or intense heat of a torch might cause damage and or color change in the stone and should be avoided.
While ultrasonic and steam cleaning is safe, the recommended cleaning method is with warm, soapy water or by a professional jeweler
