Peridot, the birthstone of Auguast, has been called the "Gem of the Sun." Some beleive that it protects its owner from "terrors of the night." Peridot is usually transparent. It occurs mainly in a yellowish green hue but can range from brownish to greenish yellow. Peridot is generally plentiful in sizes under 5 carats, larger stones beyond 10 mm have become more difficult to locate in recent years.
The word Peridot comes from the Arabic "faridat", which means "gem." Most peridot is formed deep inside the Earth and is brought to the surface by volcanic explosions. Sources for peridot are Arizona (USA), China, Pakistan, & Burma.
